One day it rained very hard, and the farmer got his Model T stuck in the ditch before he got on the road.
So, he hitched one of his strong, dependable pair of mules to pull the car out of the mud.
The mule was plenty strong to do the job—but he refused.
This had never happened before, and the farmer never had to mistreat his mules to get them to work.
After awhile, he realized what he had to do, to motivate the big mule.
He got his other mule, hitched them together, and they both pulled the car out, willingly and easily.
