{"id":1445,"date":"2013-01-01T11:27:42","date_gmt":"2013-01-01T17:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.awordforthought.com\/?p=1445"},"modified":"2013-02-11T08:37:52","modified_gmt":"2013-02-11T14:37:52","slug":"2013-success-or","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.awordforthought.com\/?p=1445","title":{"rendered":"2013 &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; SUCCESS &#8211; OR &#8211; ?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2013&#8212;SUCCESS\u00a0 OR\u00a0 FAILURE ?<\/p>\n<p>2013&#8212;SUCCESS\u00a0 OR\u00a0 FAITHFULNESS ?<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> make more money.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> get out of debt.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> lose weight.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> get in shape.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> get spiritual.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> find love.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> build my new shop.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> give more.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> help the needy.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> go to church.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> get my family on track.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> keep one resolution.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> be successful.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> change the world.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> get weary on January 1.<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> take today off.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow . . . I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span> . . .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I suppose everyone would say the opposite of success is failure.<\/p>\n<p>But what about the second line above?\u00a0 Could it imply a parallel that the opposite of success is faithfulness?\u00a0 Now that would be strange.<\/p>\n<p>But if we stop to think long enough at this beginning of a new year, we can see there is a difference between &#8220;success&#8221; and &#8220;faithfulness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to setting goals, and maintaining them, and implementing them, I propose there is even a contrast between success and faithfulness.<\/p>\n<p>Try as hard as we might to focus differently, it is almost impossible to steer away from the culture&#8217;s definition of success.<\/p>\n<p>We are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">expected<\/span> to do well, do better, financially.<\/p>\n<p>We are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">expected<\/span> to get ahead [get ahead of what, or whom?].<\/p>\n<p>We are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">expected<\/span> to be respected.<\/p>\n<p>We are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">expected<\/span> to be accepted.<\/p>\n<p>We are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">expected<\/span> to &#8220;get over it and move on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">expected<\/span> to act and speak of success.<\/p>\n<p>We are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">expected<\/span> to take ownership and tell what we gained for ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CONTRAST with this:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What is required of a steward&#8212;just be found faithful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I believe in the principles of capitalism and free enterprise and private ownership of property.\u00a0 But what if we took the above quote to base all resolutions on the principle of faithful stewardship in every part of our life?<\/p>\n<p>Right now I could go through every one of the &#8220;I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">will<\/span>&#8221; and &#8220;We are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">expected<\/span>&#8221; lines above and write a commentary on each, from the perspective of faithfulness, instead of anxiety over success or fear of failure.<\/p>\n<p>I guess &#8220;steward&#8221; is not a common word today.\u00a0 It&#8217;s because the meaning is not common today.\u00a0 &#8220;Steward&#8221; means we don&#8217;t own it&#8212;we&#8217;re taking care of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">it<\/span> for Someone else.<\/p>\n<p>And&#8212;&#8220;it&#8221; is everything in our lives, everything.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not just all our stuff, or part of our stuff.\u00a0 It&#8217;s our life, our health, our energy, our thoughts, our emotions, our soul, our relationships, our needs, our wants, our time, our future, our New Year&#8217;s Resolutions, and our real future after life seems to stop.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Perfect for January 1.2013:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Offer to God thanksgiving;<\/p>\n<p>Pay you vows [resolutions] to the most High;<\/p>\n<p>Call upon Me in the day of trouble;<\/p>\n<p>I will deliver you;<\/p>\n<p>You will glorify Me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HAPPY NEW YEAR&#8212;IN THE PARTS THAT ARE FOR KEEPS<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2013&#8212;SUCCESS\u00a0 OR\u00a0 FAILURE ? 2013&#8212;SUCCESS\u00a0 OR\u00a0 FAITHFULNESS ?
